Don't worry, I'm still alive

Yes, I know it's been a while. I would offer an excuse but to be honest I don't really have one so I'll just get on with what I've been up to.

On April 25th Australia celebrated ANZAC Day. It's the day where Australia remembers its war dead. It's a public holiday all over the country and so the place shuts down like it's Christmas. All the shops are shut, the supermarkets are shut, the buses run a reduced timetable. All this was a little inconvenient for me as I had no food in the house so I had to go for a wander and eat in a restaurant. It was a struggle, and I really didn't want to have to eat the steak, but since it was ANZAC Day I had no other option. Also, since I was off and there was little else to do, I went to the cinema and watched Failure To Launch. I certainly wasn't expecting big things from the film but it did the job of providing a couple of hours of entertainment without forcing me to think too much. (It also included a standout performance by Zooey Deschanel.) Other films I've seen since are Final Destination 3 and M:I:III.

I forgot to mention that ANZAC Day isn't the only day when these famously laid back Aussies all sit around the barbie with a couple of tinnies and let the country grind to a halt. Everything that was shut on ANZAC was shut on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. Again this caused a few food problems for the unprepared i.e me, and I only survived thanks to a loaf of bread from the local servo (petrol station) and the 2 tins of beans/1 packet of chicken noodle soup which I'd been saving in the off chance that Iran launched a nuclear attack and I had to live out a few days underground.

A couple of weeks ago, on May 2nd, I moved out of Daisy's house and into a hostel in the CBD because Daisy's trying to sell her house. Now that Su Yin's been offered a job with Motorola in Chicago, Daisy felt the house was going to be too big to live in by herself and so she's looking for somewhere smaller. I'm just very grateful that Daisy allowed me to stay with her as long as she did and hope she finds somewhere she likes soon. Also, now's as good a time as any to plug Su Yin's blog for anyone who wants to know a bit more about who managed to put up with me for 2 months, and it's only fair because she mentioned this blog on hers.

The hostel I'm staying in is okay. I'm in a six bed dorm, the place is clean enough and it's quite small which gives it a friendly atmosphere. You can find out more at:

Last Saturday I went to a bar on Hindley Street, one of the livelier streets in Adelaide, so I could watch the FA Cup and Scottish Cup finals. Thanks to the many TVs in the place I got to watch both simultaneously which was handy. Had a few drinks that night, my first in about a month. Luckily I won't have to leave the hostel at 0430 tomorrow to watch the Champions League Final as it's being shown live on terrestrial TV so I can catch that in the hostel.
